Does Your Website Pass the 3-Second Test? Why Speed is Your Most Important Design Decision

UNION Design Team· 5 min read

53% of mobile users abandon a website that takes more than 3 seconds to load. Here's what's slowing your site down and what to do about it.

The Most Honest Metric in Web Design

You can have the most beautiful website in your industry. Award-winning design, compelling copy, perfect brand colours. And if it loads in 5 seconds, most people will never see it.

Speed isn't a technical afterthought. It's a design decision — and one of the highest-ROI improvements you can make to your digital presence.

The Numbers That Should Alarm You

  • 53% of mobile users abandon a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load (Google)
  • 1-second delay in page response reduces conversions by 7%
  • Google's Core Web Vitals directly factor into your search rankings
  • A page going from 5s to 1s load time can see 70% increase in conversions

What's Slowing Your Website Down?

1. Unoptimised Images

The number one culprit. A single 4MB hero image can destroy your load time. Images should be:

  • Compressed to under 200KB where possible
  • Served in next-gen formats (WebP, AVIF)
  • Lazy-loaded (only loads when the user scrolls to them)

2. Too Many Plugins (WordPress Sites)

Every plugin adds weight. 40 plugins means 40 pieces of code loading on every page visit. Audit ruthlessly — most sites can lose 60% of their plugins without losing functionality.

3. Cheap, Shared Hosting

R50/month hosting hosts hundreds of other websites on the same server. When they're busy, you're slow. For business-critical websites, invest in quality hosting.

4. Render-Blocking JavaScript

Scripts that load before the page content — tracking pixels, chat widgets, analytics — delay when users can see and interact with your page. These should load asynchronously or be deferred.

5. No Caching

Without caching, your server rebuilds your page from scratch for every single visitor. Caching serves a pre-built version instantly. This alone can halve your load time.

What Google's Core Web Vitals Actually Measure

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): How long until the main content is visible. Target: under 2.5 seconds.
  • FID / INP (Interaction to Next Paint): How responsive is the page to user input. Target: under 200ms.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): Does content jump around as it loads? Target: under 0.1.

All three are ranking factors. All three are measurable. All three are fixable.

The South African Context

With variable connection speeds across South Africa — and a large portion of traffic coming from mobile data — speed matters even more here than in developed markets. A site that performs well in Johannesburg needs to work in Polokwane too.

What to Do Next

Run a PageSpeed test on your site right now. If you score below 70 on mobile, you have a problem worth fixing.

UNION Design builds fast websites by default — speed is baked into our process, not bolted on after the fact. Let's talk about optimising your site.
