Branding Trends 2025: What Smart Businesses Are Doing With Their Visual Identity

UNION Design Team· 6 min read

From maximalism to AI-assisted personalisation, here are the branding trends that are redefining what great brand identity looks like in 2025 — and how to apply them.

Brand Identity is Evolving Faster Than Ever

Digital-first branding, AI tools, shifting consumer values, and an increasingly visual internet have accelerated the evolution of brand identity. What felt contemporary in 2022 can look dated today.

Here are the trends defining brand identity in 2025 — and the principles that never change.

Trend 1: Bold Maximalism

After years of minimalism dominating brand design, maximalism is making a powerful return. Bold colours, expressive typography, layered elements, and rich visual complexity are being used to stand out in crowded digital feeds.

The key: Maximalism with restraint. Bold, not chaotic. Expressive, not cluttered.

Trend 2: Motion as Brand Identity

Static logos are no longer enough for digital-first brands. Animated logo marks, kinetic typography, and motion guidelines are becoming part of core brand identity systems.

A brand that moves feels alive in a way a static image simply can't.

What this means for you: Your logo should have an animated version for digital use — email signatures, social, website.

Trend 3: Anti-Design and Brutalism

Brutalist web design — raw layouts, exposed structure, stark contrast — is finding its way into brand identity. It's deliberately 'ugly' in conventional terms, but deeply memorable. Brands in fashion, art, and culture are using it to signal authenticity and edge.

Right for: Creative industries, streetwear, art, nightlife, disruptive startups.

Trend 4: Retro Modernism

Vintage aesthetics filtered through modern execution. Think 1970s colour palettes and illustrated characters applied with contemporary digital precision. It creates warmth and personality in a digital world that can feel cold.

South Africa context: Strong heritage in illustration and graphic art makes this a particularly resonant trend locally.

Trend 5: AI-Assisted Personalisation

Brands are starting to use AI to personalise visual identity at scale. Dynamic brand elements that shift by context, audience, or platform. This is early-stage technology for most businesses, but the direction of travel is clear.

Trend 6: Sustainability Signalling in Identity

Eco-conscious colour palettes, natural textures, earthy tones, and hand-drawn elements are being used to communicate genuine sustainability credentials. Consumers are increasingly sceptical of greenwashing, so visual authenticity matters more than ever.

Trend 7: Typographic Logos

Logotype — brand name as logo, in distinctive typography — is growing in popularity. Supreme, FedEx, Subway, and many premium brands rely entirely on type. Done well, typographic logos are highly distinctive and infinitely scalable.

Trend 8: Dark Mode Branding

Brands are designing for dark mode as a primary context, with colour palettes that pop on dark backgrounds and assets built for both light and dark environments.

What Hasn't Changed

Trends come and go. These principles don't:

  • Consistency creates recognition
  • Clarity creates trust
  • Distinctiveness creates memory
  • Strategy creates meaning

Chase trends only if they align with your brand's personality and positioning. Otherwise, execute the fundamentals exceptionally well.
