AI tools are disrupting the branding industry — from logo generation to brand voice assistants. Here's what's useful, what's overhyped, and what still requires human creativity.
AI Didn't Kill Design. But It Changed the Game.
Since the arrival of Midjourney, DALL-E, Adobe Firefly, and a dozen AI logo generators, the question on every creative agency's radar has been: will AI replace designers?
The short answer: no. The more useful answer: AI is becoming the most powerful creative tool since Photoshop — and the businesses that use it strategically will have a significant advantage over those who either fear it or blindly trust it.
What AI is Genuinely Good at for Branding
Concept Exploration at Scale
AI tools like Midjourney allow designers to explore 50 visual directions in the time it once took to explore 5. This is enormous for the ideation phase — more concepts explored means better final directions.
Brand Voice Development
Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Jasper can be trained on your brand's existing communication to generate content that stays in voice. This is particularly useful for social media, email, and ad copy.
Image Generation for Campaigns
For social media, presentations, and website imagery, AI-generated images can fill gaps that stock photography can't. Specific scenes, specific styles, bespoke to your brand.
Competitive Research
AI research tools can analyse competitor positioning, messaging patterns, and visual trends far faster than manual research. Better data = better strategy.
What AI Still Can't Do
Strategic Brand Positioning
AI can generate a thousand taglines. It cannot determine which one is right for your specific market, your specific audience, and your specific competitive position. That requires human insight, industry knowledge, and business acumen.
Understand Local Context
Branding for a South African audience requires understanding of local culture, language nuance, economic context, and consumer behaviour. AI tools are predominantly trained on Western, English-language data. The nuance gets lost.
Create Original Concepts
AI generates based on what it has seen. It recombines existing visual DNA. Genuinely original brand concepts — the kind that create a new visual category — still require human creativity.
Client Relationship and Discovery
The best brand work comes from deep conversations with the client about their vision, values, and aspirations. AI cannot replace the human creative brief process.
The AI Logo Trap
A word of caution on AI logo generators (Looka, Tailor Brands, etc.):
They generate generic, template-based logos that often:
- Look identical to competitors using the same tool
- Use stock icon elements that others have already trademarked
- Lack scalability (they look poor at small sizes)
- Come without any strategic rationale
For a small side project, fine. For a business you're building for the long term, they're a liability.
